On Saturday, 23 November 2024, the British-Luxembourg Society (BLS) hosted its annual gala dinner at Hôtel Le Royal in Luxembourg-Ville, marking the start of the Christmas season. The event brought together 100 members and guests, including the British Embassy Deputy Head of Mission, Danial Shaikh.
BLS President Darren Robinson opened the evening, which featured a cocktail reception with musical accompaniment by Jalo Sounds, followed by a formal dinner. BLS Vice President Events, Jacqui Spence, introduced the guest speaker, Georges Friden, Luxembourg’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom. Ambassador Friden shared his unique experiences, including his arrival in London during the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the formalities of the mourning period, and the Coronation of King Charles III. He also reflected on his student days in Cambridge and the cultural differences he observed.
The evening concluded with Loyal toasts proposed by Luxembourg MP Dr. Gérard Schockmel to the Grand Duke and by BLS Council Member Richard Aboboto to King Charles.
The gala was co-organized by Jacqui Spence and BLS Council Member Debbie McDonnell, continuing the society’s tradition of fostering connections and celebrating British and Luxembourgish ties.
